Why There is Relapse into Adult Bed Wetting?

Last Updated on March 17, 2024 by chummie

Wetting the bed at night while you are sleeping is more common in adults than you might think. Adult bed wetting, otherwise known as secondary enuresis, occurs when there is a loss of bladder control during the night resulting in nocturnal enuresis.  It affects about one person in every hundred, mainly men. Around 5 Million adults are struggling with adult bed wetting, and looking for a solution?  Bedwetting is a normal development process for a child, and is usually not a concern until the age 6 or 7. However, adult bed wetting is different and often signal many issues. To fully understand adult bed wetting we must know that Urine is produced by the kidneys and travels through the ureters to the bladder where it is stored. The bladder is basically a muscular sac that holds urine until it is ready to be released into the urethra, the tube that connects the bladder to the outside of the body. At the same time the bladder contracts, the urinary sphincter relaxes. The relaxed sphincter acts like an open door, which allows the urine to pass and exit the body. When there is a physical impediment or neurological disconnect, urination can become problematic or mistimed.

There are several factors that can lead to an adult bed wetting. Some adults wet their bed because they are bedwetters as children, while others may experience relapse, that is they have been dry for some time, and suddenly start wetting the bed. Sometimes this adult bed wetting relapse could be an occasional or onetime event, while other times it could be a more frequent. For some individuals relapsing into adult bed wetting could be the result of extreme fatigue or psychological stress, while in other cases it could due an injury or any other medical condition.  Medical issues like these can also cause bedwetting in adults: diabetes, urinary tract infection, urinary tract stones, neurological disorders, anatomical abnormalities, urinary tract calculi, prostate cancer, prostate enlargement, bladder cancer, or obstructive sleep apnea.

In either case, adult bed wetting can impact an individual’s self-confidence and cause anxiety, and may require medical attention or it can be monitored with the help of adult bed wetting alarms. If you are experiencing a relapse or have suddenly started wetting the bed, discuss with your physician to help find the best adult bed wetting treatment option. Your doctor can evaluate your medical history; run a physical or urological examination to find out the root cause of the relapse.

MANAGEMENT

While there are plenty of reasons for adult bed wetting, there are a handful of management techniques that can make all the difference when the goal is waking up dry. Take care to note when you void during the day and night.

You can use medicines or if there is no serious medical aliment, you may want to use Chummie Pro Bedwetting Alarm for monitoring bedwetting at night.

Adult bed wetting, although not as common as bedwetting in children, has many causes that range from genetics to UTIs to sleep apnea, stress or anxiety, diabetes or side effects of a drug or medicine.

My boy just turned 9 and every night he wets his bed and my wife takes care of him at night and changes his sheets! He is very sensitive about this and last night he asked when is this stopping ? I told him him ‘ very soon’ and the fact many kids have this.
He also snores at night and I did take him to a doctor who recommended a bedwetting alarm. Any idea on which alarm to buy please?

I am an adult bedwetter and am seldom dry at night. My bedwetting is caused by diabetic related problems mainly neuropathy. I wear adult nappies and plastic pants at night and have learned to live with it. I will be trying this alarm to wake me up when I wet.
